Las Palmas of Gran Canaria was founded on 24th June 1478 under the name of Real de Las Palmas by the Castilian general Juan Rejon. In 1492 Christopher Columbus landed on the island on his first journey to the Americas and stopped here also on the way back to Europe. It was made second capital of the Canary Islands in 1927 after Santa Cruz de Tenerife and nowadays it is a cosmopolitan city with an important maritime port as well as a significant tourist destination. The climate is subtropical.
