Information

A volcanic crater, today no longer active, gave birth to the Island of Sal, Cape Verde, about 50 million years ago, and it was discovered by the Portuguese sailors Diogo Gomes and Antonio da Noli in 1460 and named Llama until the start of the exploitation of the salt mines. It is 30 km long and 12 km wide while its surface is 216 square km. Mount Vermelho is the highest mountain and it reaches an altitude of 406 metres. The climate is characterized by 350 days of sunshine a year while rainy days, anyway very rare, are from August to mid-October.


To visit

Pedra de Lume, a crater of an extinct volcano and with several and extended salt mines, the small town of Espargos, the port of Palmeira and the small oasis of Algadoeima.


Curiosities

In Portuguese the name is Ilha do Sal which means Island of Salt. The International airport of Cape Verde in Sal “Amil Cabral” was used in the past as refueling stopover for flights between South Africa and the USA while in Santa Maria, during the years before the outbreak of World War II, there existed an airport that had been built by the Italians and utilized as stopover for the connection between Italy and Brazil.
