Information

Known at the times of the Pharaohs and of Ancient Rome for its mines of marbles, phosphates and also gold, emeralds and precious stones, Marsa Alam, thanks also to the opening of an international airport, is today a significant tourist destination, especially in summer. It is located near the Tropic of Cancer and inland there lies the Sahara Desert. It abounds in palm groves and mangroves, with a sea rich in fish thanks to the coral reef that is particularly enjoyed by the scuba divers for the countless still pristine diving sites where it is easy to spot dolphins, dugongs and hammerhead sharks.

Curiosities

The name Marsa Alam means, in Arabic, “bay of flags” which were utilized in the past to guide the vessels at sea, above all the smallest ones, towards the shore. The population of Marsa Alam originates from the Bedouin tribes Al Ba Abda and Al Basharya.
