Information

Already known at the time of the Minoan civilization, the most recent history of Heraklion started in 824 BC, six years after the Arabs conquered the island, as a shelter for the rebels that were banned from the Emirate of Cordoba in Spain; these rebels were engaged in piracy at the expense of the Byzantine Empire. In 961 AD the Byzantine general Niceforo II Foca re-conquered the island massacring the whole Muslim population who was charged with two centuries of plundering and piracy. In 1204 and subsequent to the IV Crusade, the control passed to the Venetians until 27th September 1669, when the Ottomans conquered the island which they named Kandyie and controlled for more than 200 years, retreating only in 1889 upon the proclamation of independence of the island. It has been Greek territory since 1913; in 1971 Heraklion became the regional capital as it is, among other things, the most populated city on the island.
