Information

Both in antiquity and in the Middle Ages strictly connected with the island of Rhodes, Karpathos was firstly mentioned by Homer in the Iliad, then by Virgil, Pliny the Elder and Strabo. Firstly conquered by Rhodes and subsequently by the Romans and the Byzantines, it was given as a gift to the Genovese pirate Lodovico Moresco in 1304 and it was occupied two years later by the Venetian nobleman Andrea Corsaro. Afterwards it became territory of the Ottoman Turks until the end of the Greek Independence War in 1822 when it actually became independent. Again in the Ottomans’ hands, in 1912, thanks to the Treaty of Lausanne, it passed under Italian control. It was given by Italy to Greece in 1947 after the Paris Peace Treaties. However, it was only from 7th March 1948 that the island was officially recognized as Greek territory.
