Curiosities

Santorini is what is left of a big volcanic crater after a massive eruption that occurred in prehistoric times and the subsequent flooding of the same crater by the sea. In antiquity Santorini was called Akrotiri by the Minoans and afterwards several names followed, Kallisté (the most beautiful), Strongyle (The Round One) and Thera or Thira. The current name Santorini was given by the Venetians in honor of Saint Irene.

Surface

The surface of the island of Santorini is 73 square km and there are no rivers on the entire island.
