It is the second common Sicilian population after Palermo and is the center of the greater conurbation of Sicily, known as "Linear System of Eastern Sicily." It is one of fifteen metropolitan cities Italian. The urban area far exceeds the municipal boundaries, and has a population of 637,587 residents, while the metropolitan area has a population of 765 623. It is the tenth Italian city by population and also the common non-regional capital of Italy's most populous. Founded in 729 BC by Calcidesi, has a long history characterized by various rulers whose remains now enrich the artistic, architectural and cultural heritage. Under the Aragonese dynasty was the capital of the Kingdom of Sicily.

Catania is the city one of the most important physicists of the twentieth century, Ettore Majorana, the protagonist of a mysterious disappearance in 1938; have made many assumptions: escape to Argentina, Germany, who has starred as a wandering homeless or who has retired to monastic life, hypotheses, the latter, which was endorsed by Sciascia in a famous novel written about this mystery. Catania gave birth to the Messenger of realism, Giovanni Verga, immortal author of the History of a blackcap and the Malavoglia. Verga wrote his first novel at the age of fifteen! Piazza del Duomo is a catalog of stunning baroque buildings. The famous statue of the Elephant (symbol of Catania), Vaccarini, incorporates an Egyptian obelisk and the elephant itself is bare, the Roman era. The animal (probably linked to the oriental cults practiced in the city in classical times) is said to have been ridden by the magician Heliodorus. The statue is a nice quote from similar works by Bernini in Rome. Famous is the Pasta alla Norma, so named in honor of the work of Bellini, Catania succulent delicacy made with eggplant and ricotta salata.
