Information

The first inhabitants of Male were the Dravidi people and subsequently the Giravari people who, it is said, descended from the Tamil people. It was conquered in more recent times by the Portuguese, then a British Protectorate from 1887 to 1965 when it became the capital of the Republic of Maldives.

To see: the urban centre with its Islamic Centre and the Mosque of the Sultan Mohammed Thakurufaanu-al-A’ z’ am among other attractions; the various atolls and islands of the Country including Hulule island where the international airport is.


Curiosities

The name Male comes from the Sanskrit word Mahaalay which is formed by the words Maha (Big) and Alay (House); they refer to the Royal Palace that housed the Royal Dynasties of the Maldives before the proclamation of the Republic. Malè is approximately on the Equator. The electricity in Malè comes from diesel generators. Malè is the second island in the world for population density after Hong Kong. The first plant to be grown in Malè was the Papaya tree.
